Paint correction and ceramic coating application

If you’ve been researching ceramic coating prices online, you’ve probably seen everything from $300 ceramic coatings all the way up to several thousand dollars. For most vehicle owners, that gets confusing very quickly.

After professionally detailing and ceramic coating vehicles for over 10 years at Bubblezz Auto Spa in Lindenhurst, NY, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that ceramic coating pricing depends far more on the prep work and paint correction process than the coating itself.

A lot of people assume ceramic coating is just something sprayed onto the paint that magically lasts for years. In reality, the correction and preparation process is what determines how good the final result actually looks and how long the coating realistically lasts.

So What Does Ceramic Coating Actually Cost?

At Bubblezz Auto Spa, realistic 5-yr ceramic coating pricing usually falls into these ranges:

  • Sedans with a one-step correction: around $1,100

  • Mid-size SUVs: around $1,300

  • Large SUVs or trucks: around $1,500+

  • Two-step correction vehicles: higher depending on paint condition

We currently offer:

  • 2-year ceramic coatings starting around $700

  • 5-year professional ceramic coatings around $1,100

  • 6+ year professional coatings around $1,700

The biggest factor affecting pricing is usually the condition of the paint before the coating is installed.

Why Paint Correction Affects Ceramic Coating Pricing

One of the biggest misconceptions customers have is believing the ceramic coating itself is the expensive part. In reality, most of the labor and skill is involved in correcting and preparing the paint properly beforehand.

For example, many “brand new” vehicles arrive at our shop covered in:

  • dealership-installed swirl marks

  • hazing

  • light scratches

  • contamination from sitting outside on lots

A lot of newer vehicles actually need at least a one-step paint correction before coating installation.

Older daily drivers or neglected vehicles often require:

  • more aggressive correction

  • multiple polishing stages

  • extra prep time

The level of correction required directly affects the final price because proper correction takes time, experience, and careful inspection.

A Real Example We See All the Time

Recently, a customer brought in a brand-new SUV expecting a quick ceramic coating installation. Once we inspected the vehicle in proper lighting, the entire surface was covered in dealership-induced marring and scratches. The customer was in utter disbelief.

The vehicle also had:

  • heavy contamination

  • poor dealership prep work

  • extremely thin paint in certain areas (as measured by a paint thickness gauge)

  • Before we even considered applying a coating, we had to:

  • Perform a full decontamination wash

  • Clay bar the surface

  • Measure paint thickness panel by panel (critical step)*

  • Perform test spots to determine the safest correction method (most important part)*

Because the paint was thin in several areas, we had to use the least aggressive correction process possible to safely improve the finish.

Instead of using an off-the-shelf ceramic coating, the customer ultimately chose a professional-grade coating system after understanding the amount of prep involved.

The end result completely transformed the vehicle. The customer later told us the car looked better than when it came from the dealership and referred multiple friends and family members afterward.

Why Cheap Ceramic Coatings Usually Fail

One of the biggest mistakes I see is customers shopping based only on price.

A proper paint correction alone can easily take:

  • 6–8 hours or more

  • sometimes significantly longer on heavily damaged paint

So when someone advertises:

“Full correction and ceramic coating for $500”

that should immediately raise concerns.

A lot of cheap ceramic coating jobs rely heavily on:

  • fillers

  • temporary gloss enhancers

  • rushed polishing

  • improper prep work

Initially, the car may look shiny under certain lighting. But after a few washes, those fillers disappear and the scratches become visible again.

The installer’s skill level matters just as much as the coating itself.

At Bubblezz Auto Spa, we measure paint thickness, perform test spots, and use the least aggressive correction methods possible to safely improve the paint while preserving long-term paint health.

What Our Ceramic Coating Process Looks Like

A professional ceramic coating installation involves far more than simply applying a product onto the paint.

Our process typically includes:

1. Pre-Wash & Hand Wash

We start with a full pre-wash and proper hand wash using professional automotive shampoos.

2. Decontamination

We use iron removers and clay bar treatment panel by panel to remove embedded contamination from the paint surface.

3. Paint Inspection & Thickness Measurements

Every vehicle is inspected carefully, including paint thickness readings across all panels.

4. Test Spot Correction

Before correcting the entire vehicle, we perform test spots to determine the safest and most effective polishing method.

5. Paint Correction

Depending on the condition of the paint, the vehicle may receive:

  • one-step correction

  • multi-step correction

This is where swirl marks, haze, oxidation, and paint defects are removed.

6. Panel Prep

After polishing, the surface is wiped down thoroughly to remove oils and polishing residue.

7. Ceramic Coating Installation

The ceramic coating is applied carefully panel by panel and leveled properly to avoid high spots or uneven curing.

8. Cure Time

The coating is allowed to cure for at least 24 hours before delivery.

What Customers Notice Most After Ceramic Coating

The first thing most customers notice is the dramatic increase in:

  • gloss

  • reflection clarity

  • paint depth

The paint simply looks cleaner, sharper, and richer overall.

Another huge difference is the hydrophobic behavior. Water beads and sheets off the surface much more aggressively, making the vehicle significantly easier to wash and maintain.

Many customers also tell us:

“You made me fall in love with my car all over again.”

Honestly, that’s one of the best parts of the job.

Is Ceramic Coating Worth It?

In my opinion, ceramic coating is absolutely worth it for:

  • daily drivers

  • black vehicles

  • luxury vehicles

  • leased vehicles

  • car enthusiasts

  • people planning to keep their vehicles long-term

It’s also great for anyone who simply enjoys having a clean, glossy vehicle that’s easier to maintain.

However, ceramic coating is not magic.

One major myth is that ceramic coatings make vehicles scratch-proof. They do not.

Ceramic coatings help reduce marring because the surface becomes smoother and easier to clean, but poor washing habits can still scratch the coating.

Maintenance still matters.

If a coating is never maintained properly, contamination builds up over time and the coating’s performance starts to decline.

Final Thoughts

If you’re considering ceramic coating for your vehicle, focus less on finding the cheapest price and more on understanding:

  • the prep process

  • correction quality

  • installer experience

  • long-term results

A properly installed ceramic coating should not only protect the vehicle, but also dramatically improve the way the paint looks and feels.
